Arts and Crafts

Well into successful careers, these clients were thinking about a place to spend more time on personal interests and pursuits: painting, woodcrafts and electronics.  Their property in a quiet, established neighbourhood offered just the right balance of community connection and privacy.

The primary spaces of the house – the kitchen, dining and family rooms - are set around a secluded back yard with a covered patio.  Together with an art studio and detached workshop, this has the feeling of an intimate village garden animated by sun and greenery.

On the upper floor, a generous gallery catches the early sun, while the master suite and an open-air deck look over the back yard.  An office with a desk and workbench provides a quiet space for business and hobbies, and a separate guest suite accommodates visitors.

The twin front gables and dormer windows recall the traditional architecture of the city, while contemporary details show that the house, like its owners, is thoroughly up-to-date.
